OUR HISTORY

Garage San Marco

The origins and evolution of one of the most significant realities in Piazzale Roma, born from an entrepreneurial intuition that knew how to transform a challenge into lasting success.

From its origins in the 1950s to the present day, Garage San Marco has accompanied the growth of modern Venice, becoming a landmark for residents and visitors. A story of innovation, service quality, and entrepreneurial vision that continues today.

In this section you can retrace the fundamental stages that led to the birth of our garage, from the first intuitions of the founders to the challenges and successes that have characterized over half a century of activity. A story intertwined with that of Piazzale Roma and contemporary Venice, testifying how private enterprise can contribute positively to urban development while always keeping customer care and service quality at the center.

A SQUARE IN CONSTANT EVOLUTION
In the 1950s, Piazzale Roma had by now consolidated its role as the main automotive access point to Venice. The large Municipal Garage, built in the 1930s, was beginning to show the first signs of saturation while traffic was constantly growing. It was clear that new solutions were needed to meet the needs of a city that, while remaining anchored to its traditions, had to come to terms with modernity.
THE BIRTH OF AN ENTREPRENEURIAL CHALLENGE
It was in this context that a group of partner friends, Messrs. Jarach and Panigai, had the intuition to build a new garage not far from the municipal one. It was not a simple choice: they had a much smaller space than that of the municipal garage, but they decided to take on the challenge with courage and entrepreneurial wisdom.
RECORD TIMES AND SERVICE QUALITY
The main objective was to build quickly, and it was fully achieved: Garage San Marco came into operation after only thirteen months from the start of construction, an almost record result for the time. But the real innovation lay in the concept of service. The garage was configured in an absolutely competitive way, with particular attention to both subscribers (mainly Venetian residents) and passing users.
A MODEL OF HOSPITALITY
In contrast to highly mechanized garages, San Marco focused on numerous and trained staff to meet customer needs. This choice to favor the human element and attention to service soon became a landmark and hospitality point for public and private institutions, including cultural ones, operating in the city and throughout the Region.
THE PUBLIC-PRIVATE CHALLENGE
Garage San Marco represented a fair challenge between services provided by the public sector and the private sector, perfectly embodying the principle of healthy competition that constitutes one of the cornerstones of the European order. The building, with its essential late-rationalist lines, fit harmoniously into the urban landscape without clashing next to the more monumental Municipal Garage.
GROWTH AND TRANSFORMATIONS
In the 1960s, with the expansion that brought the garage to exceed one thousand parking spaces, San Marco established itself as a familiar presence in the row of buildings that frame the square. Owned by Venetian entrepreneur Luigi Jarach, the garage had strategically carved out a space between the Tobacco Factory and the Aqueduct area, on a surface whose buildings had been bombed during World War II.
TOWARDS THE FUTURE
Today Garage San Marco continues its story of over half a century, having met not only the expectations of the founding partners, but also those of the city and tourism. With its eight-floor vertical development, it represents an example of how private enterprise can contribute to solving urban challenges, always maintaining high service quality in a not easy context, where the square seems smaller every day in the face of increasingly larger vehicles.
The story of Garage San Marco is the story of a business that has grown together with the city, adapting to changes and continuing to serve Venetians and visitors with the same dedication and customer care that characterized it from the beginning.
